COVID-19 UPDATE:
Downeast Treatment Center now offering Virtual Services: 667-6890

Anyone with opioid use disorder (OUD) who wishes to begin medication assisted treatment (MAT), same-day service is now available to anyone across Washington and Hancock counties via virtual services. In response to the unfolding COVID-19 crisis, the Downeast Treatment Center (DTC) in Ellsworth has begun offering immediate, virtual, rapid access to MAT for all in the Downeast region…. Patients can expect a virtual intake over phone or Zoom, prescriptions called to pharmacies near them; ongoing, remote access to a medical provider, and access to virtual group or individual sessions with a behavioral health provider. Anyone who does not have insurance or who cannot afford their insurance deductibles or copays can apply for financial support from Healthy Acadia’s Treatment Fund.  Read the full press release from Healthy Acadia.

If you have an opioid use disorder and want to start recovery with medication assisted treatment immediately, you can go to the Emergency Dept. They will assess your withdrawal symptoms, provide detox comfort medication and help enroll you in an MAT Suboxone program within 24 hours

Contact one of their offices and they will set you up with an outpatient detox care packet, connect you with recovery support counseling and enroll you in an MAT Suboxone program

Downeast Project HOPE:

If you want to enter a recovery program immediately for opioid or heroin use, you can go to one of the Project HOPE locations. The program will team you with a trained volunteer who will guide you through the process to begin detox and recovery—including accelerated placement in rehabilitation and treatment programs if that’s what you choose. Locations are based on the day of the week: 8am – 4pm Mondays (Pleasant Point Police Dept. 853-6100), Tuesdays (Ellsworth Police Dept. 667-2168), Wednesdays (coming soon – Machias Sheriffs Dept.), Thursdays (Baileyville Police Dept. 427-6203)  Click here to download the flyer

On-line resource that helps people assess their own alcohol consumption patterns to determine if their drinking is likely to be harming their health or increasing their risk for future harm. Through education and referral, the site urges those whose drinking is harmful or hazardous to take positive action, and informs all adults who consume alcohol about guidelines and caveats for lower-risk drinking. Recommended by Healthy Acadia

  • Intensive Outpatient Recovery Program ($) in both locations. Individuals in this program meet with a counselor 3 days a week for 3 hours each session for several weeks. There is a small fee per session if you do not have insurance. This program is open to anyone with a substance use disorder
  • Maine Enrichment Parenting Program This program is for anyone with a substance use disorder, has a child under 5, and has an open case with DHHS. This is an 8 week treatment/recovery program that also provides support in parenting skills
  • Maine Mother’s Network 1‐800‐244‐6431
    Case management for pregnant and parenting women using substances.
    Women who are pregnant or have children up to five years old are eligible.
  • Substance Use Peer Recovery Center Services 498-6431
    AMHC offers Peer Centers staffed by peers to provide participants in recovery with peer recovery support services which includes mentoring, education, and resource provision. The services are offered in Calais, and Machias.

Arise Addiction Recovery – Residential Treatment: Machias 856-812-7729

Nine month residential addiction recovery program. (A commitment fee is required to enter the treatment program). More info from the website: “Those in this program learn structure, discipline and hard work while they study God’s Word and apply it to their lives. Our goal is not only to help people find freedom from addiction, but to help reestablish them in their community as effective members of their families, employees and friends.”  Click here for an application.

Support groups for substance users are held weekly in Calais, Cherryfield, Lubec, and Machias.  Childcare  is provided at every meeting (see Support Groups tab for dates/time/locations of meetings).

Free Naloxone kit (includes 2 doses) available to opioid users or their families.  To receive a kit you must make an appointment to pick them up in Bangor or Ellsworth and have a 15 minute training on the use of the product. AMHC staffs this line 24/7 to help connect substance users with support, counseling, peer services, recovery coaching and other related assistance that they may need in a crisis situation.
