Community Café offers hot, nutritious meals to senior citizens while providing an opportunity for socializing and playing board games and puzzles. Currently we have a weekly Community Cafe offered in Calais at the Calais Methodist Church.

Meals on Wheels is a separate program that delivers meals to your home.  Eligibility criteria are:
–  Must be 60 years of age or older, be homebound and unable to leave your house without assistance.
–  Must be unable to prepare a meal and have no one available to prepare a meal.

Incredible Edible Milbridge (Seasonal)

Free pick-your-own veggie gardens during the growing season (typically July through early October) at the IEM Market Garden at the Red Barn Motel in Milbridge – a 14,000 sq. ft. garden with everything from broccoli to zucchini. Additionally look for IEM raised beds throughout Milbridge with more veggies. These veggies are free to all! Look for the IEM signs. IEM is a program of Women for Healthy Rural Living.

Maine Senior FarmShare Program (seasonal): 1-877-353-3771

The program allows low-income older adults to receive up to a $50 share of fresh, local produce directly from Maine farmers at no cost. Eligible participants can sign up directly with a participating farm of their choice. The program is on a first come, first served basis. Maine residents must be aged 60 or older – or aged 55 or older for Native Americans – and meet income eligibility guidelines. Participants must re-enroll yearly. The Commodity Supplemental Food Program works to improve the health of low-income Maine seniors, at least 60 years of age, by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA foods. These monthly food packages include a variety of items such as: non-fat dry and ultra pasteurized milk, juice, Farina, canned meat/poultry or fish, oats/ready-to-eat cereal, rice or pasta, peanut butter, dry beans, and canned fruits or vegetables.  Click here to find locations to pick up your food box.

Food Pantries:

Seniors please note that free 30 lb. food boxes are available to seniors over 60.  These boxes include a variety of foods, such as juice, farina, oats, ready-to-eat cereal, rice, pasta, peanut butter, dry beans, canned meat or fish, and canned fruits and vegetables. Contact your local food pantry to see if they participate in the Maine Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) and enroll for your free monthly food box.
